Simple Medical Cannabis Butter Recipe

Before making cannabis butter we recommend you decarboxylate your cannabis by placing your cannabis in a preheated oven at 106°C, for 25 minutes. The process ensures your cannabis is best prepared for cooking.

You can use any kind of unsalted butter you like, though using high-quality butter provides a better taste. High-quality butter has less water, so you will get a higher yield.

Your finished cannabis butter will have a green tinge to it because of the cannabis.

How to make the cannabis butter:

Take 100 grams of bud (or trim) and 500 grams of butter, break up the Bud and then place it into a slow cooker with the butter – add a liter of water. When you’re making cannabis butter , the key thing to remember is “low and slow”. Infusing the butter over low heat for several hours, never letting it boil, allows for full activation of the THC without scorching the herb.

The addition of the water helps to keep the temperature down and the additional volume allows for more plant material to be added so you get a stronger butter. As cannabinoids are soluble in butter and not in water the oils will be dissolved into the butter. Let the mix simmer on a low heat for 4 hours, stirring every 30 minutes or so.

When you are satisfied that all the cannabinoids have been extracted from the bud and into the butter turn off the heat and allow to cool. A cafetiere is the easiest way to filter out the unwanted plant material from your cannabis butter After filtering the oil and butter mix through the cafetiere – pour into an empty plastic milk container.

After a few hours the butter has risen to the surface and solidified, it’s then a simple matter to hold the container over a sink or faucet – carefully remove the container screw cap allowing the water to pour away.

Don’t use cannabis seeds and stems, only use buds, shake or trimmings. To further purify (clarify) the Cannabis butter you can reheat the frozen mixture and spoon off any scum that rises to the surface.

This will produce a purer butter known as Ghee (clarified butter). The cannabis butter can now be used in making your cannabis edibles. The cannabis butter can be added to any recipe you like.
