How To Make Medical Cannabis Oil (RSO/FECO) Using A Crock Pot Or Rice Cooker

Another common question we are asked if you have grown or sourced your own Medical Cannabis plants is ‘How do I make RSO Oil’?

Its vital that you really understand the process back to front, as if the process is not followed correctly, you will end up with a substandard oil, also it’s important that you are aware of how to safely produce the oil and steps to do this.

As a starting point, we suggest you watch the below short video below by Endoca, you can see a variation on this process of making Medical grade Cannabis oil utilizing a water distiller which allows you to collect and reuse your solvent. Using a rice cooker or crock pot you evaporate the solvent without being able to reuse it.

Note – We actually prefer the water distiller method of extraction here at Cannabis Cure, it is particularly useful if you are regularly making Medical Cannabis oil as your solvent costs are drastically reduced. However, this is the original and still excellent method pioneered by Rick Simpson himself. You can use any solvent in the process regardless as to whether you are using an open evaporation setup such as a rice cooker or a reclaiming method using a water distiller. In the video above, Endoca are using Ethanol (also called alcohol, ethyl alcohol and grain alcohol). Read more about solvents here.

When making Medical Cannabis oil, the better the quality of cannabis used, the better the resultant oil will be. Use top grade cannabis buds for the best results and completely dry the cannabis in an oven to decarboxylate it.

First Step – How To Decarboxylate Cannabis
decarboxylaated cannabis

Cannabis must be decarboxylated if it’s to be eaten, taken orally, or used topically. The cannabis plant produces (THC-A) and (CBD-A) the acid forms of these two major cannabinoids.

Heating cannabis converts the (THC-A) to (THC) and converts (CBD-A) to (CBD). Because raw cannabis contains primarily (THC-A) eating uncooked cannabis doesn’t have a psychoactive effect. Heat decarboxylation chemically changes (THC-A) turning it into (THC). There’s a lot of confusion about  decarboxylating. The general consensus regarding the optimum decarboxylation temperatures is:

For maximum THC-A to THC conversion – heat at 245°F for 60 minutes
For maximum CBD-A to CBD conversion – heat at 245°F for 90 minutes

Put your dry cannabis in a glass Pyrex covered casserole dish. This keeps the terpenes and other volatiles from evaporating off. You want to preserve all of the terpenes because they’re an important component in addition to cannabinoids. Decarboxylating will result in a 10% weight loss so 30 grams will yield 27 grams decarboxylated weight.

How To Make RSO/FECO Oil In A Slow Cooker – The Pressure Cooker Sous-Vide Method

This method requires a pressure cooker, a metal lid from a jar, an air-tight tempered glass or air-tight stainless steel container, 2 litres of water and 30 grams or 1 ounce of cannabis.

Method:

1. Place the cannabis buds into your air-tight container. Do not grind or bust it up, but make sure the lid on your container is sealed properly so that no moisture will get on or into your plant material.

2. Place the metal lid in the centre of your pressure cooker. (This is used as a riser, to keep your air-tight container up off the bottom of your pressure cooker.)

3. Place your cannabis loaded, air-tight container on top of the metal lid in the centre of your pressure cooker.

4. Add 2 litres of water to your pressure cooker.

5. Secure the lid of your pressure cooker by locking it in place and placing the rocker weight in its place.

6. Bring your pressure cooker to a gentle boil. The weight should be briskly rocking back and forth. Once brisk rocking of the rocker weight is achieved, the internal temperature inside the pressure cooker will be the perfect decarboxylation temperature range of 230 degrees F to 250 degrees F and it will consistently stay in range.

7. After 40 minutes of pressure cooking time, turn your stove burner off and remove your pressure cooker away from the burner so that it has a chance to cool.

8. Once cooled the pressure will be release from inside your pressure cooker, allowing its lid to be safely removed.

9. Using an oven mitt, remove your air-tight container from your pressure cooker and let it cool until it returns to room temperature and is comfortable to handle.

Step 1

Place the bone dry cannabis material into a jar and cover with your solvent of choice, shake vigorously, the longer you agitate the mixture the more cannabinoids you will extract. However, if you use a polar solvent like Ethanol then short exposures are preferred as polar solvents also extract water solubles from the plant such as chlorophyll. Filter the plant solvent mixture, a cafetière is a convenient and quick way to remove the bulk of the plant material.

Step 2

The final filtration is through a coffee filter which removes the empty trichomes and other fine contaminants. If you have filtered your solution correctly you will be left with an amber looking liquid.

Step 3

Pour the liquid into a Rice Cooker and with the lid removed, turn it on. As the Rice Cooker heats up the solvent will start to boil. Be careful, boiling solvents are very volatile.

Step 4

When the solvent has reduced in volume carefully pour into a good quality glass receptacle and complete the final evaporation on a hot plate or coffee warmer. As the volume reduces the mixture will be less volatile, the final evaporation process when making cannabis oil can take 24 to 48 hours, continue the evaporation process until there is no more activity.

The Final Product

The colour of the final oil will vary depending on the strain used, the method, the solvent used and more importantly the patience showed when making medical cannabis oil.

RSO Storage & Dosage Information
  • The oil is best stored in a syringe.
  • Draw the oil up whilst slightly warm and store in the refrigerator.
  • It usually takes the average person about 90 days to ingest 60 ml.
  • Take three small doses per day, approximately the size of a grain of rice, every 8 hours, morning, afternoon and bedtime.
  • The dose should be doubled every four days until 1 gram/ml per day is ingested. Most people get to the point where they can ingest 1 gram/ml per day in about 30-35 days.
  • A beginner’s dose would equal about ¼ of a drop.
